How To Transfer Your Facebook Friends To Google+

Google+ is all the rage right now but what good is a social network if none of your friends are on it? Rather than wait for them to try out / adopt Google+, you can simply add your Facebook friends list into Google+ to help give them a little nudge onto this new platform. This doesn’t automatically make your Facebook friends a Google+ account but it is certainly a handy way to import your list of friends with minimal effort. Here’s how you do it:

Step 1

In Google Chrome (get it here if you don’t have it yet), install the chrome extension.

Step 2

Export your friends list to a .csv file and then upload that to Google+ and / or your Google Contacts. I’ve tried both and it works but sometimes one works…sometimes the other works. In Google+, click ‘Circles‘ and then ‘Find and Invite’ and then ‘Upload address book.’

Step 3

Invite your Facebook friends over to Google+, add them to circles, enjoy!

If This Doesn’t Work

Facebook is actively fighting to make it very difficult to export your friends list. This chrome extension may not always work but its programmers are fighting the good fight. If the extension doesn’t work, you can do this:

  • Set up a Yahoo! mail account (or log into one you already have).
  • Import your contacts from Facebook.
  • Export that list and then upload that list into Google+ as described in Step 2 above.

Or one could just not do it and stay with Facebook. Sure, it's not perfect, but do we really need to inch even closer to a world where everything we do on our computers is through one company, especially a company that puts using us as an attractant for advertisers above user satisfaction?
