PaperTab: The Flexible Location-Aware E-Ink Screen Of The Future

papertabHere’s a piece of tech that you should keep an eye on. It’s a stunning innovation that combines some of the best features of your favorite tablets and e-readers into one screen. Yes, a screen.

PaperTab is still in development (as you can see in the above video) but has me pretty excited as I imagine it could be a cost-effective way to bring less-distracting technology into the classroom. So why is it so exciting? Because PaperTab is a flexible touch-screen enabled e-ink screen (similar to the Kindle, but flexible) that is location-aware. By that I mean you can place it on a desk and it’ll know when other PaperTabs are nearby. Like you see in those Samsung commercials, you can even ‘zap’ screens onto other screens by just being near it. Check out the video to see it in action.

It’s like something you’d expect to see in Back To The Future Part 2. I could see Doc and Marty picking up a PaperTab and seeing it change in front of their eyes and being blown away. Wait, that’s actually what happened in the movie! Perhaps Robert Zemeckis had actually come up with the idea for PaperTab decades ago?

(See also this hilarious examination of how terrible the newspapers were in Back to the Future. It’s awesome.)

But I digress. Back to the Future aside … PaperTab is a great piece of tech that will be fun to watch as it matures and perhaps gets integrated into the next Kindle or Nook or … only time will tell.
