There’s plenty of wild speculation about the next generation of Apple’s iPad. Here’s the latest rumors, unconfirmed speculation, and other bits of information floating around about the popular device.
According to Geek.com, “Qualcomm will provide chips that allow the iPad 2 to run on both CDMA and GSM networks.” This, of course, is sorry news for AT&T, currently the only mobile carrier that offers the iPad 3G. Verizon currently carries the Apple’s Wi-Fi iPad bundled with a MiFi hotspot; CDMA support would eliminate the need for a 3G connectivity peripheral, as noted by Digital Trends. [Huffington Post]
Reuters reports with conviction that the next iPad will have front and rear-facing cameras, a higher res display, and will start production in the early months of next year. [Reuters]
Reuters cites multiple supplier sources, two of whom said that production would begin soon for iPad 2. The next generation of Apple’s tablet is expected to be thinner and lighter, with an improved screen resolution that will can hopefully keep up with the iPhone 4′s retina display. Most importantly, it will add a front-facing camera to allow for video chat. [Reuters]
The device will remain at 10-inches, though will now feature both front and rear cameras (not a huge surprise), and… an SD slot. That’s right — our sources say with near certainty that the device will have a dedicated SD slot built in (with no traditional USB slot). In fact, see that weird notch in the photo [above]? That’s where the SD part will be located. What’s most interesting, however, is what’s happening under the hood. [Engadget]
Recently leaked photos and video of cases supposedly made for the iPad 2 showed a mysterious opening along the bottom edge. (Check it out here.) According to MacOtakara, “[This openiing] is a large, wide-ranged speaker unit covered with metal mesh,” rather than an SD slot or a USB port, as was previously speculated. [Apple Insider]
MacOtakara’s anonymous Chinese source said that the next-generation iPad units are already in production and will feature some subtle design changes. For one, MacOtakara writes, the iPad 2 frame will measure 186 mm wide by 239 mm tall, making it 3 mm smaller than its predecessor. [Huffington Post]
The display size will measure 9.7 inches, as it does on the current iPad, according to MacOtakara. This means that the iPad 2′s screen bezels will be slightly smaller than they were on the original iPad. [Apple Insider]
While the first iPad’s case featured a slightly curved back covering, MacOtakara says that the iPad 2 will resemble a flat-backed iPod Touch.
I’ll be updating this page as more rumors surface. Again, these are all rumors and nothing is really confirmed.
Have you been waiting for the next generation iPad before buying? If you’re a teacher, would you use the front and rear-facing cameras to help connect students? I’m anxious to see how the new features of the iPad (and hopefully a lower price) enable enhanced learning.Be sure to let me know what you think of all the rumors / expectations for the next generation iPad in the comments or by @ mentioning @edudemic on Twitter!
