6 Technologies to Revolutionize the Classroom

From the computer to the iPad, technology is revolutionizing how we work, play, socialize, and learn (sometimes all at once). In celebration of Computer Science Education Week, we’re running the excellent infographic below, which explores 6 landmark technologies, including

  1. Eye Tracking Technology
  2. Virtual Reality Technology
  3. Immersive Technology
  4. Wireless Technology
  5. Wearable Computing Technology
  6. Video Chat Technology

Educational Applications

The infographic discusses many applications for these technologies, which can do everything from helping people with disabilities more fluidly navigate the world to making our homes intelligent. There are, however, just as many applications within the educational realm. Smart schools, video conference homework help, immersive reality learning apps that will fully gamify the learning experience without allowing for distraction. The opportunities are limited only by instructor and student imaginations (and school budgets…).

How to Use This Infographic With Your Students

Your students are on the front lines of a technological revolution. Whether you show them this infographic directly or simply use it as inspiration, here are a few great topics to consider for discussions, debates and essays:

  1. Which one of these technologies is most exciting to you and why?
  2. Pick one technology and brainstorm ten ways you can see it being used in the future.
  3. Pretend that each one of these technologies is a superpower — one that you possess. What would you do with it?
  4. If you could fully immerse yourself into a virtual world, what world would you choose and why? (You can also have students create their own virtual worlds as a writing exercise or even as a computer programming and design exercise).
  5. In the near future, we will be connected everywhere we go — and so will many of the objects around us, thanks to wireless and smart technology. What do you like about this? What do you fear?
  6. When many of today’s technologists were your age, they read and watched sci fi novels and movies that featured outlandish technology, like wireless communication devices. When they became adults, those technologists turned those ideas into a reality. What is the craziest technological device you would invent if you could?

Additionally, you could use this infographic as a great opportunity to discuss a history of computers (thanks again, Mr. Turing!).

I am particularly interested in the possible uses of wearable technology in the classroom. It will be interesting to see if many of these wearable devices move beyond the health and fitness applications.

Me too! I think they could be extra useful for students with learning disabilities.
