My heart is breaking for the families of the victims of Sandy Hook Elementary School. I am a school teacher in a tiny school in eastern Canada, and I was stunned and at a loss for words as I listened to the news of this horrific tragedy. On Monday morning as I waited for my students,I looked around my classroom and asked myself, “What would I do in that same situation? Would I have the courage that those brave teachers shown in face of such an event?” Then came the question from my students. “What would you do Kim if that happened here?’ I could only answer that I hoped that I would show the same courage as the teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary.
Please know that even though we have never met and will probably never meet, you are not alone in your tragedy. I wanted to show your community that this little school in the Gulf of the Saint Lawrence shares your loss, so today each of my grade nine students are sending messages of sympathy. May God bless and comfort you all.

Here’s a more fundamental way to respond. Work to decrease the general level of violence and the glorification of violence in our society. Refuse to pay to see violent films. Refuse to buy clothes for your children that are plastered with images of death and violence. Teach your children sports that don’t involve trying to hurt others. Write to advertisers and complain when they use images of violence to sell products. Complain to programmers who create violence so-called entertainment aimed at children. Refuse to buy video games for yourself or your children that celebrate and teach violence.

Other countries have as many guns as we do, but they do not glorify violence the way we do.

Get to the root cause. Refuse to teach violence.
