Toys R Us is getting into the tablet wars. They just announced a $150 kid-oriented tablet that’s perfect for a classroom without a lot of money to spend. The Tabeo, as it’s called, is wi-fi enabled, has extensive parental controls, and comes pre-loaded with about 50 apps such as Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja.
While the Tabeo may not be as powerful as other tablets, it’s a niche market that Toys R Us wants to capitalize on. Look for further moves into the ‘safe tablet for kids’ arena very soon. Amazon Kindle Fire HD has an extensive set of parental controls, Apple’s iPad is expected to make similar enhancements, and most Android tablets are as well.
So whether it’s surprising or not, everyone and their mother is jumping into the tablet game. Only time will tell which devices sink or swim.
Tabeo is available for pre-order now and will be sold exclusively by Toys R Us beginning Oct. 21.
